| Chittravanu Majumdar Chittravanu Majumdar was born in Pads in 1956. He graduated from the
Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta in 198 1. Majumdar held his first show in
Calcutta in 1985. He has also worked in France from time to time. Apart from his
paintings, Majumdar has designed a number of book and magazine covers for Seagull Books
and has illustrated several publications for them.
One of the most powerful of the younger generation of painters, Majumdar
works in oils and acrylics. His forte is very large paintings and his style is fragmented,
semi-abstract forms. Bold, vigorous brushstrokes, pure, saturated colors mark Majumdar's
paintings. Of late, Majumdar has been turning towards figurative works. One encounters the
image of Kali in his paintings. Interestingly, Chittravanu' father, Nirode Majumdar, also
used the figures of mother goddesses but Majumdar senior's treatment and palette were
entirely different. Majumdar has recently been using material other than paint on the
canvas. Old wood blocks, patterned fabrics, even paper create different focal points of
interest. |
